Read about Carnival in Paros Life and Naxos Life. The Carnival (the time before the start of Lent) is a great peg on which to hang a winter holiday in Greece. We are planning on spending next weekend (5 & 6 March) on Naxos, taking part in the torch lit parade on Saturday night and the sea front procession on Sunday. But now I've seen a poster for an event in Katapola on Saturday.
One year I was eating at To Mouragio when a small troup of Carnival revellers in fancy dress arrived, danced a little (with all the tables there is no much room!) and sang, then were given a drink and went on their way.
A particular feature of the Naxos festivities is local bagpipe players, and traditional dancing, some danced by groups that look very much like English Morris dancers.
