The Express Scopelitis approaching Naxos on a windy day

The Express Scopelitis, the small local ferry running between Amorgos and Naxos, arriving in Naxos on a very windy day.  I've travelled on the Express Scopelitis in a very rough sea, with the waves lashing against the windows of the lounge - but perhaps not quite as rough as this.............................!

Many Cyclades museums require upgrades due to growing collections, visitors

http://www.ekathimerini.com/220775/article/ekathimerini/life/many-cyclades-museums-require-upgrades-due-to-growing-collections-visitors

"The biggest such renovation project is currently under way in the Kastro district of Naxos town."

I didn't notice nay work being done when I was last in Naxos in May 2107.  And where is Promponas House?

Naxos - the lull before the storm

The weather in Greece in March can be idyllic, as these photos show.  But, as at all times of the year, you do need to be prepared for sudden changes in the weather.  Sunshine and no breeze one day, a Force 9 gale the next!

The Express Scopelitis at Naxos during a storm - 14 March 2013

There were Force 9 gusts of wind on Naxos yesterday, and the Express Scopelitis did not leave for Amorgos at her usual time of 2 p.m.

Greece v Russia - celebrations on Naxos

Party Time In Greece As The National Side Stuns Russia In EURO 2012

Read about the match as seen on Naxos.

Greeks are very enthusiastic about football, but very well-behaved.

Many bars and tavernas have large screens.

Last year I went to one of my favourite tavernas in Naxos. There were 30, 40, perhaps more young men in a group eating there, all wearing football shirts. If I had been in England I would have rapidly moved on and eaten elsewhere. But in Naxos, no problem.

Earlier this year I was on an island much smaller than Naxos, in winter. In one taverna I noticed a rolled up screen and stand. A day or two later I noticed the taverna was crowded - with people watching a football match on the screen.

A final thought on football. Often in bars and tavernas the TV is switched on, but the volume turned down. The sound you hear is from a CD or radio. But when there is a football match on TV, the sound you hear is of the football match.

Salaturi - skate salad

Skate salad is one of my favourite lunches in Greece - and I have only found it on the menu at a small ouzerie on Naxos.  Strips of warm skate, finely chopped red onion, parsley, olive oil, and chunks of bread.   Mmmmmmmm!

Last time I googled "salaturi", I found no results.  Now there are some results.

Skate salad  (Gourmet traveller).  This recipe includes lemon juice and salted capers.  There was probably lemon juice in the version I like, but not discernable.

Skate salad (How to cook fish)  This is a recipe for a more substantial dish, including potatoes.

What - no ferries from Naxos to Piraeus on a Saturday??!

Don't worry about the heading - this is about travel in March.  I hope "normal service" will have resumed by next month when more tourists start visiting Greece.

But at present there are no ferries from Naxos to Piraeus on a Saturday.  See http://www.gtp.gr/

There are ferries leaving on Monday to Friday at 09.30.; and ferries leaving at 19.15 on every day except Saturday.  The evening ferries have a slight problem - they arrive at Piraeus at 01.00.  The last metro used to be at midnight, perhaps earlier with the cutbacks...................  Why does the ferry arrive so late - the ferries are timetabled to travel more slowly.

If you want to go from Naxos to the mainland by "scenic" route, there is another possibility on Wednesdays.  leave Naxos at 15.05 on the Aqua Spirit, and travel via Paros, Syros, Kythnos and Kea, and reach Lavrio (on the mainland, but about a two hour bus ride to Athens, if there is a bus at that time of night!) at 23.30.

So - get on that ferry - but first find your ferry!
