"The ban’s aim was to protect protect the near-extinct species of sage, marjoram, oregano and sideritis which is better known as Cretan mountain tea.I wonder how many similar bans are in force that could trap the unwary tourist? Are herbs that are sold in Greece herbs that have been picked in the wild, or cultivated? And herbs in Greece are not just for consumption - I have seen herbs spread on the ground at Easter, giving off a wonderful scent when people taking part in processions walk over them.
As AMNA reported, the forestry department of Chania, one of the island’s main towns, had forbidden the eradication, cutting, gathering and transporting of a variety of wild herbs in protected areas of the island until the end of 2018."
