Mmmmmmmmmmmmm - I must try the chickpea balls - I ate some delicious chick pea balls on the island of Serifos in Greece.  Keftedes, or fritters, can be excellent in Greece.  Freshly cooked they are delicious.  Occasionally they are cooked in advance, and microwaved - not so nice.

My favourites are made with courgette, feta and a few snippings of herbs.  At one favourite taverna they are as light as a feather.  I've tried making something similar, but they are nowhere near as good as those at one of my favourite tavernas.

A holiday in Greece certainly has something (more than just something, lot of things as I've been going back for over 30 years).  But none of the places  / hotels featured in this article are for me.

Chania’s Public Market Counts a Century | Greece.GreekReporter.com Latest News from Greece

Chania’s Public Market Counts a Century | Greece.GreekReporter.com Latest News from Greece

I went to this market regularly when I was in Chania.

Another, much smaller, "market" that comes to mind is that in Mykonos.  This was a few years ago, so things may have changed.  But in the early morning produce (both fruit and veg., IIRC) was on sale by the harbour.  A completely different atmosphere to the tourist oriented shops elsewhere on Mykonos.

And in Kastelorizo there was a large (by any standards, not just by Kastelorizo standards!) market hall with sloping slabs for produce.  I stayed in a room just behind the market hall, but never saw a market during the week i stayed on Kastelorizo.

Spam: the processed meat goes posh

Spam: the processed meat goes posh | Life and style | guardian.co.uk

"Spam in Greece?", you may be thinking.

Last year I went to a concert at the Megaron (Martha Argerich, as you ask).  A very good concert - sold out, and the only seat I could get was in the "posh" area.  And what did Athens "high society" nibble during the interval.  I know that Greece has serious economic problems, but I was surprised to see plates of what looked like spam sandwiches on the bar.

Greece's only certainty in 2013? Predictions are futile | Nick Malkoutzis | Comment is free | The Guardian

"There is very little about Greece's condition that can provide them with this comfort. The only thing they can be certain of is that 2013 won't be a year for predictions."
